MANDATORY iSTEM PARENT- iSTEM STUDENT MEETING, MARCH 1st, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at iSTEM -  facilitated by Ms. Dione DeMitro from Lakeland Community College for the College Credit Plus option.  If your child will be taking CCP courses at iSTEM next year, a parent and the iSTEM student are required to attend.

Geauga County Educational Service Center STEM Consortium One of Five Ohio Public Schools Awarded CBE Grants

Chardon, OH – The Ohio Department of Education awarded the Competency-Based Education (CBE) Pilot Grant to five Ohio public school districts and organizations.  The Geauga County Educational Service Center will serve as the fiscal agent and will lead the unique consortium of four established independent STEM designated schools.

The consortium includes: iSTEM Geauga Early College High School, grades 9-12, located on the Auburn Career Center campus in Concord Township; Bio-Med Science Academy, grades 9-12, located on Northeast Ohio Medical University’s campus in Rootstown; Dayton Regional STEM School, grades 6-12, located in Kettering; and Global Impact STEM Academy, grades 9-12, located in Springfield.  These schools provide students with personalized learning pathways which allow the students the flexibility to master each set of skills, competencies and knowledge necessary to advance to the next set of learning objectives. “iSTEM and the other schools implementing CBE are at the forefront of innovative instruction as well as measuring students’ demonstration of their learning. This project positions iSTEM to pilot strategies and build a statewide CBE system, "said CBE Project Director, Suzanne Allen, Geauga County ESC.

Each grant recipient will receive $400,000.00 and will have discretion in the design of their pilot programs.  Each recipient will be required to support the initiative’s goals and meet the following requirements:

  • Implement a Competency-Based Education System (CBE)
  • Build Community Partnerships
  • Tie into other State and Federal Initiatives
  • Facilitate Collaborative Leadership
  • Participate in State Collaborative Workgroups
  • Serve as a CBE Model
  • Engage in data collection and evaluation activities.
iSTEM Geauga Early College High School (iSTEM), as well as the other participating STEM schools, have a head start as each of these schools currently utilize mastery-based learning, which is at the root of CBE.  Mastery-based learning offers classroom teachers the ability to use flexible instruction and assessments to meet individual student needs and provides students the opportunity to demonstrate competencies in real world contexts.  “The CBE project validates what business and industry have been saying for years; it’s not whether or not a student or graduate passed a standardized test but rather how they can the demonstrate or apply the learning in a relevant way”, said Rich Petersen, formerly with Astro Manufacturing in Lake County and member of the Alliance for Working Together (AWT) and iSTEM Board of Education.

The pilot will bring these four STEM schools together for intensive collaboration and sharing of practices to increase the adaptability of their individual school’s offerings, to explore more appropriate resources and tools to measure student progress toward mastery and further develop a comprehensive performance-based assessment system/process. Dr. Trista Warren, iSTEM CAO/Superintendent shared, “this project is a great opportunity for our iSTEM educators to partner with other STEM schools from across Ohio, to enhance existing efforts to truly personalize students’ learning”
